Bridget Jones finally has some luck in her life; she has a great job as a screenwriter and a new boyfriend who’s over twenty years younger than her…
Once again Renée Zellweger plays cinema’s favourite hapless heroine, Bridget Jones, and we are looking forward for her escapades hitting our big screens. With talk of Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy - the fourth film in the franchise - being Zellweger’s last, the question was put to the actress at the recent premiere, to which she replied that “fingers crossed” it was not the case, with the Oscar winner going on to say that she still felt “really, really lucky to get the part.”
Zellweger also spoke about the "beautiful story and really the most personal for Helen (Fielding, author of the books and the co-screenwriter of the new film). She is sharing about her own experiences about loss, grief and finding new happiness, it's a pretty special one."
Bridget’s creator Fielding was asked where she felt the success of the story came from and she pinpointed its “emotional honesty. When I first wrote Bridget it was an anonymous column in The Independent which I thought would be stopped after six weeks for being too silly. That freed me up to be honest in a way I could never have been otherwise, and I think that's what people related to. I thought I was the only person who felt like that, and it turns out for a lot of people there is a huge gap between how you feel you are supposed to be and how you really are."
So time for a quick recap…
In Bridget Jones’s Baby (2016) we saw Bridget falling pregnant to the man she had ‘enjoyed’ an on and off again relationship with, and ultimately married, Mark Darcy (Colin Firth)…which leads into the new film. We don’t want to tap into the story too much but suffice to say, like every Bridget Jones fan we have loved the trailer and can’t wait for the main event!
What we can reveal is that we have two newcomers (and possible love interests) to the world of Bridget Jones: Leo Woodall (TV’s One Day and Prime Target) and BAFTA winner Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave (2013)). Returning alongside Renée Zellweger are Colin Firth, Hugh Grant, Gemma Jones and Jim Broadbent, with directorial duties being undertaken by Michael Morris (To Leslie (2022)).
So it is set up to be great Valentine’s Day 2025!
