After meeting with newly elected U.S. President Thaddeus Ross, played by Harrison Ford in his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut, Sam finds himself in the middle of an international incident. He must discover the reason behind a nefarious global plot before the true mastermind has the entire world seeing red.
Captain America: Brave New World is astonishingly the thirty-fifth film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and is a sequel The Incredible Hulk (2008), Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), Captain America: Civil War (2016), and The Falcon and The Winter Soldier (2021).
The film is the first in the franchise to feature Sam Wilson (a.k.a. Falcon) as Captain America, and starring as the Captain is Anthony Mackie. Although Sam Wilson was seen resplendent in the uniform in the TV series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, this is his true coming out. Director Julius Onah (The Cloverfield Paradox (2018), Luce (2019)) said as much in a recent interview, saying how the film puts Captain America “through the paces. Part of the challenge for Sam as Captain America, working within the government, is the way he’s going to make decisions. The point of view he’s going to have will at times put him at odds with the President.”
Excitingly for us fans, Onah also highlighted what we can expect with the action sequences, saying “The action in this movie is incredibly exciting because this is a guy who can break; this is a guy who can bleed. We get to have a lot of fun pushing him to the limit.”
What of the new man who is stepping behind the shield after Chris Evans, Anthony Mackie? He recently spoke about how embraced he was by all the Marvel family saying, “Our first day on set, all these people I had known for over a decade now, and everybody just came up and said congratulations.”
Mackie also spoke about how his Captain would be “brain over brawn” and he went on to say that “Sam’s evolution is simple. He’s still a counsellor. He’s still serving soldiers, but at the same time, now he’s a leader of his community in the country.”
The actor also reflected on the Super Soldier Serum as to how that would affect his incarnation.
“It’s very different with the serum — you can fight anybody. When you don’t have the serum, you have to be smart and engineer different ways of defeating [enemies]. With Sam, him being a counsellor, he uses more of his brains than brawn. He uses more of his wit than his fist. He’s more of a friend to everyone.”
So lots to feel excited about as we are about to step into a brave new world!
Captain America: Brave New World also stars Giancarlo Esposito as Sidewinder, Danny Ramirez as Joaquin Torres, Shira Haas as Ruth Bat-Seraph and Time Blake Nelson as Samuel Sterns.
